Norfolk health trainers to receive qualifications at east of England event

Duxford in Cambridgeshire, Monday 23 November

Edited by Jane Hill: A group of 12 health trainers from Norfolk will be presented with their City & Guilds level 3 certificate qualifications at an event to be held in Duxford on Monday 23 November 2009.

Around 150 health trainers from across the east of England area are expected to attend.

The role of the health trainers is to speak with people in their own community and work to bring about behaviour changes in areas, such as smoking cessation, healthy eating and sensible alcohol consumption.

NHS Norfolk funds the health trainer service in Norfolk, with trainers in Thetford, King’s Lynn and Norwich. The service aims to reach members of the public who tend not to access standard NHS support services.

Meeting will discuss work of Norfolk agencies to combat domestic violence

The Norman Centre in Norwich, Thursday 19 November

Edited by Andy Porter: Members of the public are welcome to attend the discussion on the steps being taken by agencies in Norfolk to combat domestic violence and sexual abuse at a meeting of the Norwich area committee at The Norman Centre, Bignold Road, Norwich on Thursday 19 November 2009, at 6.30pm.

Sue Lambert, Norfolk’s domestic violence reduction co–ordinator, will explain how agencies work together to tackle the issue – and how a number of trained specialists are available to offer crisis intervention for victims at high risk of danger.

Figures show that in a two–year period [April 2007 to March 2009] there were 4,439 victims of domestic crimes with 81 per cent of the victims women and 32 per cent of those repeat victims.

Representatives of the Leeway Women’s Aid project in Norwich, which marks its 35th birthday this year and was one of the first refuges in the country, will also be on hand to explain how they work with the police to support women assessed as being at risk of repeat violence causing further significant harm.

Leeway, which has three refuges in Norfolk, provides a number of services in the community working with mothers and works to support children based in the refuge and supports women based in the refuge who are finding parenting difficult because of their experience of domestic violence.

Become expert in your own condition, through self–care, says NHS Norfolk

Quality of life with more responsibility for your health

Edited by Andy Porter: Self Care Week is a national awareness campaign, which continues until November 15. It aims to encourage those with a long–term condition to take control of their wellbeing through self–care.

NHS Norfolk has committed to the local self–care campaign by providing educational programmes for those people with a long–term condition with an emphasis on improving their self–management skills.

The services will include education programmes for five specific conditions, such as, diabetes, respiratory conditions, cardiovascular conditions, neurological conditions and arthritis.

The education programmes will vary according to condition, but could include lifestyle and exercise, medicine management, communication skills, symptom management [including pain management and anxiety management] and care planning for patients.

Sheila Childerhouse, chair of NHS Norfolk, will open
a ‘fact–finding’ event for potential service suppliers tomorrow [Wednesday 11 November 2009], which takes place at South Green Park Enterprise Centre in Mattishall.

Bold and Ambitious is NHS Norfolk’s strategic plan for the county, for 2009 until 2014. One of its five initiatives is to enable people to become experts in their own conditions, by promoting increased independence, choice and empowerment.

Wendy Hardicker, assistant director of Out of Hospital Care at NHS Norfolk, explained that the providers selected from the Mattishall event will deliver educational programmes for individuals. Referrals to these services will be available through healthcare professionals including GPs and consultants.

“Self–care is about helping people to self–manage and take control of their lives. People who are supported to self–care can live longer, suffer less pain, anxiety, depression and fatigue, and be more active and independent. We intend to help people acquire the skills needed to achieve this through the commissioning of educational programmes,” she said.

It is expected that the education programmes will be in place by April 2010.

Public talk on stroke care at Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital

Benjamin Gooch Lecture Theatre, 12 November

Edited by Andy Porter: Health experts at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital will give a talk on stroke care, aimed at the public, from 6pm to 8pm on Thursday 12 November 2009 in the hospital’s Benjamin Gooch Lecture Theatre.

Those attending will hear more about the new life–saving Thrombolysis [clot–busting] Service, the early supported discharge team that helps people to rehabilitate at home, plus the new £8 million stroke rehabilitation unit being built at Norwich Community Hospital. It will also describe how patients can protect their own health to reduce the risk of having a stroke.

Stroke occurs when a vessel that brings blood to the brain bursts or is clogged by a blood clot. Risk factors for stroke include high blood pressure, physical inactivity, smoking, and alcohol overuse. A stroke can leave brain cells damaged or destroyed, affecting body functions. For example, if a stroke damages the part of the brain that controls how limbs move, the person will have difficulty moving their arms.

This event is part of a regular programme of Medicine for Members events aimed at local people who have joined the hospital Trust as a member. Membership is free and open to those living in Norfolk and Waveney.

Award for innovative health care for Norfolk providers and partners

Hi–tech solutions help local people live independently

Edited by Andy Porter: Both NHS Norfolk, Norfolk County Council and two private sector partner organisations recently won an award for their use of hi–tech equipment to help people to live independently.

The award recognises the partnership at work between NHS Norfolk and Norfolk County Council to deliver Telecare, which allows patients to live independently and safely, and Telehealth, which allows patients to measure their own vital signs, such as weight or blood pressure. Clinicians can then access the vital signs information electronically.

The Telehealth equipment, supplied by TeleMedCare is under trial in Woodside House, a care home run by the Barchester Healthcare Group. It is planned to further develop the use of both Telecare and Telehealth in care homes to support independence and reduce the number of admissions to hospital.

Both Barchester Healthcare and TeleMedCare were also recipients of the award, in the Best Use of Telehealth and Telecare category of E–Health Insider Awards 2009.

Norfolk County Council’s Assistive Technology Service has helped local people for the past five years. In the region of 25,000 people are supported with a community alarm and last year upwards of 4,000 people were supported through the provision of assistive technology.

A DVD is available online, which shows a range of technology available to help older people live independently in their own homes. To watch the film, visit website at: www.youtube.com/norfolkcountycouncil.

Event pays tribute to people who provide care in Norfolk communities

Work of Adult Social Services department exhibited

Edited by Jane Hill: The efforts of people in Norfolk who work in caring roles in the community were recognised at an event last week, hosted by the chairman of Norfolk County Council, Mrs Shelagh Gurney.

The reception brought together more than 100 nurses, midwives, volunteers and officers from a wide–range of organisations that included Hellesdon Hospital, Age Concern Norfolk, Voluntary Norfolk, Norfolk County Council Adult Social Services and Hellesdon Medical Practice.

The event was held at Hellesdon Community Centre and included a speech by Mrs Gurney together with a presentation by Harold Bodmer, director of Adult Social Services at Norfolk County Council.

Claire Holmes–Urquhart, a senior training officer from Norfolk County Council, also spoke at the event about the Passport 2 Care qualification which is available to carers and personal assistants who currently work in the community. The nationally recognised qualification is offered to anyone in Norfolk who cares for a relative, friend or neighbour free–of–charge and provides them with support and recognition for their commitment.

Rosemary Hurdman, personalisation ambassador for Norfolk County Council, introduced Personal Budgets, a system which is designed to give all those who are eligible more control and flexibility over their care. As the name suggests, Personal Budgets involve giving a person a budget from which they can then choose the kind of care they think will benefit them best.

The Hellesdon High School wind band provided entertainment and display stands showcased the varied work of Norfolk County Council’s Adult Social Services department.

Call for Norfolk drinkers to keep a drink diary in alcohol awareness week

Know Your Limits campaign, 19 to 25 October 2009

Edited by Jane Hill: Alcohol Awareness Week in England and Wales runs from 19 October to 25 October 2009 – and NHS Norfolk is urging everyone to use the opportunity to take stock of just how much they consume.

The Know Your Limits campaign is set to raise awareness of the health risks of drinking above the chief medical officer’s lower–risk guidelines on regular drinking, and provide straightforward help to those who want to cut–back.

The campaign aims to encourage people to keep a drink diary for the week to learn whether their drinking could be putting them at risk.

Visit website: www.nhs.uk/units for more information.

NHS Norfolk’s lead commissioner for substance misuse, Jocelyn Pike, says everyone who enjoys the odd drink of alcohol should think about how much they really consume – not just people who know they have a problem.

“Alcohol Awareness Week gives all of us a spur to think more carefully about how much we drink and the effects it could be having,” she said. “Keeping a drinks diary is a simple way of making a start.

“Many people are not aware of the serious effects that alcohol can have on their mental and physical health.”

Alcohol–related hospital admissions are on the increase at a rate of 70,000 per year in England. Alcohol costs the health service in England £2.7 billion per annum.

In Norfolk, it is estimated that around 35,000 people have a mild, moderate or severe alcohol dependency and among the risks associated with excessive alcohol consumption are unsafe sex, unplanned pregnancies, higher chance of accidents and aggressive behaviour.
